Charles O. "Butch" Taft, 64, of rural Lakeville, died Monday , January 4, in Tallahassee FL. Butch will be missed by all his rodeo friends.
Charles O. “Butch” Taft, 64, of rural Lakeville, died Monday, January 4, in Tallahassee Memorial Hospital from injuries received in a trucking accident in Tallahassee, FL on Monday. Butch was born May 31, 1945 in Detroit, MI and was the son of Charles E. and Doris (Currin) Taft. He spent most of his childhood in Taft, TN. Following high school graduation, he attended Tennessee Technical College where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture. While at Tennessee Tech, he competed on the college rodeo team and was a bare-back bronc riding champion. It was during this time he met his future wife, Hazel Wolgamott, and they were married December 17, 1967.
After college, Butch continued to rodeo professionally as both a contestant and judge, prior to becoming a rodeo stock contractor. His company, Buckeye Rodeo, has received numerous awards from the Midstates Rodeo Association including Stock Contractor of the Year, Rodeo of the Year, Bare-Back Horse of the Year, Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year, and Bull of the Year. He and his wife Hazel, were also founding members of the Ohio High School Rodeo Association, and hosted the Association’s State Finals on their Nashville, Ohio farm for many years. He had been a resident of the Nashville/Lakeville area since 1980.
Butch was a driver for Cowen Truck Line of Perrysville since 1998 and had previously worked as a tour bus driver for Muskingum Coach Company of Coshocton. For many years he taught high school vocational agriculture in Tennessee, Florida, and Ohio at Loudonville High School. He was awarded an Honorary State Future Farmers of American Degree by the Ohio FFA and earned the Honorary and Chapter FFA Degree from both Loudonville High School and West Holmes High School FFA Chapters. He was a former volunteer firefighter and EMT for Nashville Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Fayetteville, TN, Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Wolgamott Taft, 1 daughter and son-in-law: Jane & Craig Houin, of rural Nashville, 1 son: Charles Edward “C.E.” Taft, of rural Nashville; 3 grandchildren: Aubree Ann, Garrett, and Tristan Houin, his mother: Doris Taft of Taft, TN, and his brother: Larry Taft of Nashville, TN. He was preceded in death by his father: Charles E. Taft.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9 at 10:30 AM in Nashville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele, officiating. Burial will be in Nashville Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, Jan. 8 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to Western Holmes County Joint Fire District, c/o Nashville Fire Dept., Galen Garver, Treasurer, PO Box 103, Nashville, OH 44661.
